Dr. Buerger gives helpful tips on how to educate your patients on the effects that sugar has on the body. She discusses how to help people read food labels and the recommended daily limit of “free” sugar per day for kiddos, women and men.
After Thoughts: The consumption of sugar leads to weight gain because insulin also affects a hormone called “leptin”. Leptin is our natural appetite suppressant that tells our brain that we are full. Imbalanced insulin levels, along with a high consumption of certain sugars (mainly fructose) has been linked to “leptin resistance”; resulting in the brain not being able to receive the message to stop eating, thus promoting weight gain and obesity.
